The first to cultivate vanilla were the Totonac people, who inhabit the Mazatlan Valley on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the present-day state of Vera Cruz. Attempts to cultivate the vanilla plant outside Mexico and Central America proved futile because of the symbiotic relationship between the tlilxochitl vine that produced the vanilla orchid and the local species of Melipona bee. In 1841, a 12-year-old French-owned slave by the name of Edmond Albius, who lived on Île Bourbon, discovered the plant could be hand pollinated, allowing global cultivation.
Mexican vanilla beans are truly nature’s
original beans. All other vanilla beans
grown in other parts of the world are direct
descendents of the original vanilla orchids of
Mexico. It is due to the unique climate and
growing conditions of Mexico that Mexican
vanilla beans contain the sweet, rich, creamy
taste that people the world over have come to
recognize as the “original” vanilla.
It is this combination of personal care and
perfect natural growing conditions that
allow Vera Cruz Premium Mexican Vanilla
Products to procure only the finest vanilla
beans to be used in our proprietary curing
and manufacturing processes.
